Microstructural investigation of novel shape memory alloys: On the effect of chemical complexity and functional properties. Oluwaseyi Oluwabi addresses two questions, which are important for a progress in the shape memory field. The first is associated with chemical complexity, i.e. how starting from a binary NiTi system additional alloy elements affect the martensitic transformation and the functional properties. This part of the work builds on preliminary results which were established by David Piorunek. The second part of the work aims for the identification of new shape memory alloys with superior functional properties. Oluwaseyi Oluwabi uses a new screening approach which involves diffusion multiples and high resolution in-situ scanning electron microscopy. This technique also allows to study atomic mobilities in shape memory alloys with chemically complex compositions. Candidate alloys are prepared as bulk materials by arc melting and thermomechanical processing. Finally, the functional properties of these materials are studied using state of art (thermo-) mechanical characterization techniques.
