Modelling of microstructural evolution of high temperature materials during additive manufacturing. Catalina Pineda Heresi works in the field of thermodynamic and kinetic simulation of high-temperature materials. In the future, these alloys will increasingly be processed using additive manufacturing. During additive manufacturing, starting with metal powder layers which are melted, solidify and subjected to several remelting cycles, micro cracks can form as the solid material forms. These may be associated with phase changes which cause volume changes (such as between γ and γ′). They may also result from the formation of low melting eutectica on grain boundaries following segregation processes. Simulations are used to identify alloy composition which promise to minimize micro crack formation. With this in mind, other properties like oxidation resistance, the formation of undesirable phases and creep also need to be considered. Furthermore, thermodynamic data such as heat capacities at process temperatures have to be calculated to optimize the manufacturing process. The predictions from the simulations will finally be validated experimentally.
